The Las Vegas Aces will be without Jewell Loyd for tonight’s pivotal Game 2 of the WNBA semifinals against the Golden State Valkyries.
Loyd, who is dealing with a left leg injury, has officially been downgraded to OUT after suffering the injury during Sunday’s Game 1 loss to Golden State.
The news is a significant blow for Las Vegas, which is already trying to overcome a 1-0 series deficit.
Dana Evans Gets Positive Injury Update
There is some good news for the Aces.
Guard Dana Evans has been upgraded to PROBABLE after dealing with a right knee injury. Evans has not played since September 22, but her potential return would give Las Vegas another option in the backcourt.
Evans was an important contributor off the bench during the Aces’ championship run last season, averaging 8.4 points and 2.9 assists.
Aces Facing Major Depth Challenge
Loyd’s absence comes at a particularly difficult time.
The Aces already entered the series dealing with injuries to NaLyssa Smith, Stephanie Talbot and Janiah Barker, while Talbot was also dealing with a left-leg injury heading into Game 2.
Loyd started Game 1 in place of Talbot before suffering her injury during the second half. She finished the regular season averaging 8.0 points per game and provided Las Vegas with perimeter shooting and defensive versatility.
Meanwhile, Golden State enters Game 2 with a chance to take a commanding 2-0 series lead.
The Valkyries won Game 1, 71-60, behind Gabby Williams’ 25 points, 11 rebounds and five assists while dominating the Aces on the glass, 58-34. Golden State’s bench also outscored Las Vegas’ reserves 27-7.
What This Means for Game 2
With Loyd officially ruled out, more pressure falls on A’ja Wilson, Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray to carry the Aces offensively.
If Evans is able to return, her presence could provide a much-needed boost to a Las Vegas backcourt that is being stretched thin.
For Golden State, the opportunity is clear:
Win Game 2 and the Valkyries head to Las Vegas with a 2-0 series lead.
For the defending champions, tonight is essentially a must-win.
